TL;DR

  • EOFY falls on 30 June. Plan your gift list and budget in the months before, not in June.
  • Staff gifts and client gifts are treated differently for tax. Check the ATO rules below, then confirm with your accountant.
  • Choose items people will keep and use: drinkware, pens, apparel, bags, desk items and confectionery.
  • Allow time for artwork approval, branding and delivery. Free artwork and express options help when time is short.
  • Presentation matters. Good packaging makes a modest gift feel considered.

Why businesses give gifts at EOFY

The Australian tax year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Many businesses use the end of that period to look back and say thank you.

There are three common reasons.

  • Recognise staff. A gift shows you noticed the year’s effort. It also reaches people who can’t make a party, such as remote staff or those with family commitments.
  • Thank clients. A gift at the close of the year keeps your business in mind as new budgets are set.
  • Use the moment. Teams are already reviewing the year. A gift fits naturally into that.

A gift also carries your brand. A branded item that sits on a desk or travels in a bag keeps working long after the card is read.

Check the tax rules first

Tax treatment affects how much you spend and on whom. This is general information only. Your accountant should confirm how it applies to your business.

Gifts to employees and FBT

The ATO says fringe benefits tax (FBT) treatment depends on the amount spent per employee, the timing and location of any event, who attends and the value and type of gifts.

The minor benefits exemption is often relevant. A benefit is exempt only when its notional taxable value is less than $300 and it would be unreasonable to treat it as a fringe benefit. It is not an automatic exemption for every gift. Frequency and regularity count.

In practice, a single, infrequent staff gift well under $300 per person is the situation the exemption is aimed at. Regular or repeated benefits may be treated differently.

Gifts to clients

The ATO states that benefits provided to clients are not subject to FBT. Income tax is a separate question.

ATO ruling TD 2016/14 says a gift to a current or former client can be deductible when it is made to produce future assessable income. Exclusions apply, including private and entertainment expenditure.

That difference matters when you choose the gift. The ATO says entertainment provided to clients is generally not income-tax deductible. The Western Australian Small Business Development Corporation also notes that tickets to sport or theatre and gifts of a personal nature are not necessarily deductible. A branded, business-related item is easier to justify than a personal present.

Keep your invoices and a short note of who received what and why. Your accountant will want them.

Match the gift to the person

Start with who receives it. Then pick the product.

Recipient What works well Why
Whole team Drinkware, apparel, notebooks, confectionery Easy to distribute and suits most people
Key clients Leather goods, quality pens, premium drinkware, gift sets Feels considered and sits on a desk
Event attendees Bags, caps, pens, small confectionery Practical and low cost per head
Remote staff Items that post easily, such as desk accessories and drinkware Reaches people wherever they work
Long-term partners Awards and engraved or boxed items Marks the relationship

Ideas by budget

Set a per-person budget first. It keeps the list simple and helps with the FBT check above for staff.

Low budget, large groups

Bulk gifts for a big team or an event need to be simple and useful. Think pens, notebooks, tote bags, caps and small confectionery. Our guides to promotional products under $20 and promotional products under $50 show what fits these budgets.

If you are choosing for staff or clients and want to stay below a set figure, the best corporate gifts under $50 guide is a good place to start.

Mid budget, key clients and team leaders

Here you can step up in quality. Insulated drinkware, leather accessories and gift sets feel more personal. A product like the Premium Leather Valuables Pouch suits a client who travels. A boxed set can make a modest item feel like a proper gift.

Higher budget, senior contacts and awards

For your most important relationships, choose fewer, better items. Engraved awards, premium pens and quality bags all work. Keep the branding tasteful. A discreet logo is more likely to be used.

Branded items people actually use

A gift only builds your brand if it gets used. These categories do well.

Pens and stationery

A good pen is used for years. Choose a pen with a smooth writing action and a clean logo. Cheap pens with a light barrel often end up in a drawer. For client gifts, step up to a metal pen in a gift box. Browse our pens and office ranges for options.

Apparel and headwear

Apparel suits teams and events. Polos, tees, jackets and caps work when the fit and fabric are good. Offer a size range, and ask for sizes before you order. For client gifts, apparel is harder to get right because sizes are personal. Caps and one-size items are safer.

For a fun team gift, the Tin of Tees and the Oval Tee Caddy suit golf days and sporting events.

Tin of Tees

Drinkware

Reusable bottles and cups are used daily, so your logo gets seen often. Check the lid type and capacity. Make sure the print finish suits the surface. Our drinkware range includes options for every budget.

Bags

Totes, backpacks and satchels carry your logo around town. Choose sturdy handles and a print area large enough for your logo.

Promotional confectionery

Sweets are popular at EOFY. They are easy to give and almost everyone enjoys them. Check these details before you order:

  • Dietary needs. Check allergens and ask the supplier for ingredient information. Consider options for people who avoid gluten, nuts or animal products.
  • Packaging. Confirm that your logo fits the wrapper or tin.
  • Storage and heat. Chocolate can melt in summer transit. This matters less in June in most of Australia, but think about northern states and warehouses.
  • Shelf life. Ask for the best-before date so the gift is fresh when it arrives.

Presentation counts

Packaging is the first thing the recipient sees. A good product in poor packaging sends the wrong message. A simple box, tissue or sleeve can lift the whole gift.

Our corporate gift packaging budget guide explains options and costs per unit. Decide on packaging early. It affects lead time and delivery size.

Recognise people beyond the gift

A gift works best when it comes with a clear thank you. A handwritten card from a manager makes a difference. Name one thing the person did well.

Some teams also run a peer-nominated award alongside the gifts. This is inclusive for people in different locations. An online voting platform for employee polls lets everyone nominate and vote from wherever they work. You can then present the winner with a branded award.

How to order custom-branded gifts in bulk

Bulk orders have a few steps. Plan for each one.

  1. Set your budget and quantity. Count staff, clients and spares. Add a few extra for late additions.
  2. Choose products. Pick items that suit the recipient, not only the price.
  3. Send your logo. Vector files such as EPS or AI work best. If you don’t have artwork, our free artwork service can prepare it.
  4. Approve the proof. Check colours, spelling and logo placement. Most delays happen here.
  5. Confirm delivery. Give a street address where someone can receive the goods. Ask about split deliveries if you have several offices.
  6. Plan for returns and gaps. Order a small buffer so you are not caught short.

Minimum quantities and lead times

Minimum order quantities depend on the product and the type of branding. Small items such as pens often have higher minimums than premium items such as drinkware or leather goods. Lead times depend on stock levels, branding method and delivery location.

We suggest you ask for a quote early, confirm the quantity and timeline in writing, and leave a buffer. June is busy for many suppliers, because many businesses plan for EOFY at the same time. Ordering well ahead gives you more choice and a calmer process.

Steps for ordering EOFY gifts early

Our view: start early and keep it useful

We have supplied branded merchandise to Australian businesses for over 25 years. Here is what we see.

The gifts that work are simple. They suit the person and carry a clean logo. They arrive on time and look good out of the box.

The orders that go wrong have one thing in common: they start late. A short timeline leaves no room for a proof change, a stock issue or a delivery delay.

We source factory-direct through a global supply chain. That helps us keep quality consistent and prices competitive. It also means we can recommend products with confidence.

Our advice:

  • Set the budget and list before you browse.
  • Choose one or two core products. Add a premium option for key clients.
  • Keep branding tidy. One colour, well placed, often looks best.
  • Order early, and tell us your deadline when you ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

When should I order EOFY corporate gifts?

Order as early as you can, ideally a few months before 30 June. Artwork approval, branding and delivery all take time. June is a busy month for many suppliers, so early orders have more choice and less pressure.

Are EOFY gifts to staff subject to FBT?

It depends. The ATO says the minor benefits exemption applies only when the notional taxable value is under $300 and it would be unreasonable to treat the benefit as a fringe benefit. Frequency matters too. Check your situation with your accountant.

Are client gifts tax deductible?

They can be. The ATO says a gift to a client may be deductible when it is made to produce future assessable income. Entertainment and personal gifts are treated differently. Keep records and ask your accountant.

What is a good EOFY gift for a large team?

Choose something useful that suits most people, such as drinkware, a notebook and pen set, or confectionery. Keep dietary needs in mind for food. For a small budget, see our guide to promotional products under $20.

Can you help if I don’t have a logo file?

Yes. We offer free artwork design. Send us what you have and we will prepare it for your approval.
